BIRMINGHAM, Alabama -- The Southern Ductile Castings division
of Citation Corporation (Nasdaq: CAST) was struck as of midnight Sunday
night, March 16, by the GMP Union local 62 when members failed to ratify
a proposed new agreement. Southern Ductile continued limited operations
with supervisory employees today. There are approximately 200 production
workers at the facility.
The strike is not expected to have a material impact
on Citation earnings assuming it is of limited duration.
The company had offered a labor agreement containing
substantial increases in wages, pensions and life insurance and maintaining
health care coverage at its current level with no increases in the employee
contribution during the life of the agreement. Average wages at the plant
are approximately $10.00 per hour. Citation Corporation also operates
similar divisions in other localities.
Citation is a metal components producer for capital goods
and durable goods industries with 16 manufacturing divisions located in
eight states. The Bessemer plant has annual sales of approximately $25
million and produces ductile iron castings for passenger cars and light
trucks, heavy trucks, industrial valves, farm equipment and electrical
equipment. For Citation, fiscal 1996 sales were $487.8 million and the
corporation has approximately 5,600 employees.
