BIRMINGHAM, Alabama - Production employees at the Southern Ductile Castings plant in Bessemer, Alabama ratified a new-three year labor agreement in a vote held Saturday, March 29 and returned to work today (Monday, March 31). Members of the GMP Union employed at Southern Ductile had been on strike since March 16, when they rejected a proposed agreement.
In addition to the agreement at Southern Ductile Castings, production workers at Citations Iroquois Foundry in Browntown, Wisconsin, last Thursday (March 27) also ratified a new three-year labor agreement. Workers at Iroquois Foundry are represented by the United Steelworkers.
Both agreements are for three year terms and both result in approximately 10 per cent increases during the life of the agreement as well as life and health insurance and retirement programs.
There are approximately 200 production employees at each of the two Citation plants. Southern Ductile Castings has annual sales of approximately $25 million and produces ductile iron castings weighing up to approximately 150 pounds for passenger cars and light trucks, heavy trucks, industrial valves, farm equipment and electrical equipment.
Iroquois Foundry produces large gray iron castings weighing up to about 3,000 pounds for industrial valves, pumps and compressors, farm equipment and construction equipment. Its annual sales are approximately $20 million.
Citation Corporation is a metal components producer for capital and durable goods industries with 16 manufacturing divisions located in eight states. It has approximately 5,600 employees and fiscal 1996 annual sales were $488 million.
