Citation Corp. Projects 20 Percent of 2010 Revenue From “Green” Markets and Manufacturing
Innovative Lost Foam Process Reduces Emissions, Trims Weight and Cost by 25 Percent
Novi, Mich., September 15, 2009 - Citation Corp. today announced it expects nearly 20 percent of its 2010 revenue to come from environmentally-friendly markets and manufacturing processes.
One key to this growth in “green” business is the company’s lost foam iron casting technology that reduces machining, material and part complexity, resulting in a 25 percent cost and weight reduction and lower emissions, compared to conventional processes. Lost foam is used for engine, chassis, suspension and steering components in the transportation, off-highway and industrial markets.
“With an increased emphasis on launching sustainable solutions into the market, our lost foam technology is one example of how we’re developing environmentally-friendly products that our customers and end-consumers want,” said Doug Grimm, CEO, Citation Corp.
Citation secured its position as the world’s largest manufacturer of lost foam castings in January through the acquisition of Foseco-Morval, now integrated into the company’s Columbiana, Ala., facility.
According to the Department of Energy Website: “The lost foam process has significant cost and environmental advantages, including allowing designers to reduce machining, consolidate parts and minimize assembly operations while reducing solid waste and emissions.” Some specific advantages include:
- Consolidates parts – Several complex shapes are integrated into one assembly, simplifying manufacturing and improving quality
- Reduces or eliminates machining and fabrication – Fewer processes, energy and suppliers are needed, which lowers costs
- 10-30 percent lighter assemblies – Weight savings translate into increased fuel savings
In addition to its lost foam capabilities, Citation has worked closely with key customers during the past several years on “green” initiatives, including on-highway and off-highway EPA 2010-compliant engines, hybrid vehicles and alternative energy applications.
Citation is a privately held corporation headquartered in Novi, Michigan. Citation employs 1,100 people at 11 manufacturing facilities in Alabama, Indiana, North Carolina and Wisconsin. The company designs, develops and manufactures high-quality cast, machined and assembled components for the transportation and industrial markets.
